Error Message on Hard Drive Failure

When your hard drive is beginning to fail, it might start popping up with the error messages on the screen of your computer's monitor. Most likely, your computer gives you the information that a serious disk error occurred in the attempt to read/write drive.

If you are not able to identify the issue, you need to consider any of those error messages as a cause of the damaged hard drive.

Keep powering on the damaged disk is a potential threat to data on it. Try avoiding any, or at least minimizing all unnecessary manipulations with the damaged hard drive, the sooner you disconnect the failed disk from power cable, the better chance is to salvage all your files or even the whole operating system from it.

CMOS/BIOS Level Messages

When SMART Monitoring Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (or S.M.A.R.T.) is a monitoring system for computer hard disk drives and SSDs (solid-state drives) enabled in BIOS settings, you may have warning diagnostic messages about the drive problem upon restart:
Hard drive Self Monitoring System has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. May or may not indicate a hard drive problem. Strike F1 to continue, F2 to run the setup utility.

When hitting F1 gives something like this
No boot device available. SATA 0 installed SATA 1 none SATA 2 installed SATA 3 none
In that case no functioning/usable drive exists in your computer anymore, failed device must be removed and send to HDD recovery lab.

Common Errors and Warnings specific to operating system or computer type

Errors messages In MS Windows, related to Hard Drive Problems

If the operating system cannot get the access to the booting code, system files, or user's data on the hard drive - then, the disk is either: damaged, or not properly connected, or has a corrupted boot code. Typically, as a result - system is halted with the black or blue screen. The hard drive with the missing system files or getting bad sectors, clusters, or missing allocations can provide the same behavior.

Error messages on boot up for PC computers and console Run-time applications

These hard disk's errors happen on the boot or in the attempt to run DOS, Novell, or some console command or utility, or when your computer cannot find or initialize the drive controller or the drive diagnosis failed. Usually indicates damaged or unbootable drive. Check, if your computer BIOS/CMOS is able to identify the model number.

 ️ Warning
If the drive has a real physical-level problem of any kind, especially with the moving parts of HDD or electronic components, the attempt to recover data with any software tools could make the situation much worse, as that would cause a massive data loss in vain attempt to get the data, leaving you with overworked and overused data storage device. The situation with running a bad hard drive is similar to driving on flat tire. Just think about the value of your data - it may be much more than the cost of the mutilated rim.

Damaged Seagate Ultrathin HDD ST500LT032 drive
The drive just quit working without giving any warning. I turned on laptop as usual, but nothing happened just blue screen: no error message. Tried to reboot it a few times, still nothing. The local computer repair shop told me that there is a firmware problem and suggested to look for a reliable data recovery service. The guy at work gave me your contacts.
The email files are the most priority, anything else would be a great bonus and are the same value to me (tax returns in Quick Tax, MS Excel, Word, Power Point, QuickBooks), some scans, don't care about system files nor program files.
... would love to thank you for your outstanding work in restoring my files. Your devotion to the problems of others is simply amazing. The customer service was so pleasant and helpful every time I'd called. Now it's my turn to pass the word around about your service. I'm glad that as an expensive and professional data recovery firm as you are here in Toronto. Paulina H. Barrie, Ontario, Canada
